News: Record Store Day comes to Hull

The annual Record Store Day takes place on Saturday April 13th, and unlike the last few years local vinyl junkies won’t have to travel far to get their RSD fix. In recent times the nearest RSD participant (since the closure of GJM Music in Princes Quay) has been Bug Vinyl in Beverley, but this year sees not one but two Hull record shops flying the Record Store Day banner. Both Wrecking Ball Music And Books in Princes Quay (run by GJM’s Gary Marks) and Warren Records will be RSD stockists, and with Bug Vinyl also continuing its association with the annual event, Hull music fans are spoilt for choice this year.

The official release list is now out, and there’s local interest there too. Perhaps the most notable release for local music is the long awaited reissue of Basil Kirchin’s seminal 1971 album Worlds Within Worlds. With original copies fetching serious money, this limited reissue should be highly sought after.

There’s further local interest with the now-customary slew of Bowie releases this year including a picture disc release of the 1974 set Pin-Ups, on which both Mick Ronson and Trevor Bolder appear (third Spider Woody Woodmansey had flown the coop by then).

With three local shops taking part, and a couple of rather nice local interest releases on the list, this year’s Record Store Day should be a great day in these parts.
