1984 – 1992; 1996
Roland Gift (vocals)
Andy Cox (guitars, keyboards)
David Steele (bass, keyboards, synths)
Formed in Birmingham, but qualifying for Hull Music Archive by virtue of singer Roland Gift’s long term residency in Hull (though Gift was himself born in Birmingham before moving to Hull as a boy). Gift had previously fronted celebrated Hull ska band Akrylykz – their ties with the 2-Tone and ska revival movements had landed them support slots with a number of big names, including The Beat. When The Beat split, band members Andy Cox and David Steele recruited Roland Gift to be the singer in their new band – Fine Young Cannibals.
A string of hit singles followed (including 5 top 10s) with “She Drives Me Crazy” peaking at number 5 in the UK charts. In the US they would surpass even that achievement, with both “She Drives Me Crazy” and follow up “Good Thing” climbing to the coveted number one spot in the Billboard charts.
First album Fine Young Cannibals went gold in the UK, and second album The Raw And The Cooked went stellar – triple platinum in the UK, double platinum in the US, number one album in five countries around the world. At their peak, FYC were genuinely massive.
Though the band split in 1992, they did briefly reconvene in 1996 to record new single “The Flame”, released to promote greatest hits compilation The Finest.
Roland Gift released an eponymous solo album in 2002 and has continued to perform sporadically as a solo artist since then.
